LE SSERAFIM is a 5-member girl group affiliated with Source Music, debuting on May 2, 2022, through a collaboration between HYBE and Source Music. The group's name, 'LE SSERAFIM,' is an anagram created by HYBE's Bang Si-hyuk, representing 'IM FEARLESS.' It encapsulates the group's confidence and strong determination to move forward without being swayed by the world's gaze.

The group's name draws inspiration from the highest-ranking angels in the hierarchy mentioned in the Old Testament, known as 'Seraphim,' meaning 'those who burn.' Additionally, the French article 'LE' functions as a singular masculine definite article, although in the group name, 'LE' and 'SSERAFIM' are separated. In Korean, it is written as '르세라핌' (Le Serafim).

The members consist of Sakura, Kim Chae-won, Heo Yun-jin, Kazuha, and Hong Eun-chae, and each member actively uses their real names rather than stage names, showcasing individual characteristics and talents. The team is composed of two Koreans and three foreigners.

Their debut album 'FEARLESS' set a record by selling 176,861 copies on the release day, marking the highest debut album sales for a girl group on the first day. On the second day, they competed for the highest debut album first-week sales among girl groups.

The members are relatively mature in age, and their debut stage arrangements were notably extravagant. Additionally, all members share the introverted 'I' personality type according to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

Incidental Information

Source Music, after launching the girl group GFriend, shifted its focus to preparing for the debut of a boy group. In 2019, Source Music was acquired by Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE Entertainment) and transformed into a girl group-exclusive label. Despite initial plans to debut a girl group in 2021 through a joint audition project with HYBE CBO Min Hee-jin, the plans were disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, they recruited former IZONE members Miyawaki Sakura and Kim Chae-won, renewing their efforts to launch a new girl group. Yoon Seok-jun, who was co-CEO of Big Hit Entertainment at the time, acknowledged the potential of female groups, citing the influence of fans on IZONE's debut album sales. This anticipation proved accurate as LE SSERAFIM set new records.

Leader Kim Chae-won confirmed her move to Source Music in late June 2021, becoming the first member to join the debut lineup. Sakura's joining was delayed due to negotiations with her Japanese agency but was confirmed in August after concluding her activities with HKT48. She became the second member to join the debut lineup. In November 2021, her contract with the Japanese agency Vernalossom expired. Huh Yun-jin, who returned from the United States, joined as the third member, followed by Kim Ga-ram as the fourth member in the summer of 2021. Kazuha, selected through Source Music's online audition, joined as the fifth member in November 2021, trained in the Netherlands until January 2022, and then officially joined the group. Hong Eun-chae, the final member, was selected among existing Source Music trainees and joined on January 20th, completing the debut lineup.

LE SSERAFIM is the first girl group from Source Music in about seven years since the debut of GFriend in 2015. Despite previous collaborations between Source Music and Big Hit Entertainment on girl groups, LE SSERAFIM is the first girl group launched through the collaboration of Source Music and HYBE Entertainment.

Source Music officially promoted the girl group under the collaboration with HYBE Entertainment, referring to them as a "next-level rookie" on their official Twitter.

Two members who debuted with Source Music in 2015, Shinbi and Umji of GFriend, are coincidentally the youngest and oldest members of LE SSERAFIM.

The group's name, LE SSERAFIM, although using different alphabets from 'Seraphim,' carries the meaning of the angelic 'Seraphim' and symbolizes angelic white wings in the official logo's anagram. The group's composition members were revealed through the "First Moment of LE SSERAFIM" project starting from April 4, 2022, introducing each member one by one.

Except for leader Kim Chae-won, other members do not have officially designated positions. Despite being K-pop idols from a Korean agency, the group comprises two Koreans and three foreigners, with Huh Yun-jin holding American nationality. The original composition was three Koreans and three foreigners at debut, but with one Korean member's departure, the foreign members became the majority.

All members use their real names instead of stage names. Korean members use their full names, while American members use their Korean name 'Huh Yun-jin' (not a legal name) as their stage name. Japanese members Sakura and Kazuha use their given names as stage names. Interestingly, the full names of the Japanese members (Miyawaki Sakura, Nakamura Kazuha) are transformed into seven-character names in Korean, matching the number of syllables in their stage names.

In terms of age, the debut lineup includes members from a relatively mature age range. Sakura, as the eldest, spent 7 years as a Japanese idol in HKT48 and AKB48, while Kim Chae-won debuted with IZ*ONE in 2018 and returned to debut with LE SSERAFIM after about 4 years. Huh Yun-jin participated in Produce 48, contributing to the overall entertainment experience of the members. As of the debut date in May 2022, Sakura is 24, Kim Chae-won is 21, and Huh Yun-jin is 20, making her the eldest among new-generation girl group members. The age difference between the eldest and youngest members is 8 years.

The debut lineup's official arrangement during early appearances was usually from left to right: Kazuha - Kim Chae-won - Sakura - Hong Eun-chae - Huh Yun-jin. However, starting with "ANTIFRAGILE," the arrangement changed to Huh Yun-jin - Kim Chae-won - Kazuha - Sakura - Hong Eun-chae.

The title track "Blue Flame" from the debut album, which served as their debut song, featured lyrics co-written by members Kim Chae-won and Huh Yun-jin. It also served as the theme song for the HYBE original story webtoon "Crimson Heart," depicting the members' journey towards the 'Unknown' guided by the symbol of desire, the 'Blue Flame.'
